Aims and rule of the Directory

The Directory: A Brief Reign of Chaos (1795-1799)

1. The Rise of the Directory: After the Reign of Terror, France was exhausted. The people yearned for stability and order. The new government, known as the Directory, was a five-man executive body designed to balance the power between the different factions. It promised to uphold the ideals of the Revolution while restoring order.
