Data Collection

1. Questionnaires: Participants will complete a brief questionnaire containing both closed and open-ended questions. This allows for both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Example questions include:

  • On a scale of 1 (not important) to 5 (very important), how important is a practitioner's style of dress to you when seeking medical assistance?
  • What specific aspects of a practitioner's clothing influence your perception of their professionalism (e.g., cleanliness, formality, type of clothing)?
  • Have you ever felt uncomfortable or had a negative experience with a practitioner based on their choice of clothing? If so, please describe the experience.

2. Interviews: Following the questionnaire, a subset of participants will be invited for semi-structured interviews. These interviews will delve deeper into the reasons behind their stated preferences, exploring themes such as trust, professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and personal experiences. Example questions include:

  • Can you tell me about a time when you felt particularly reassured or comfortable with a practitioner's appearance? What about their attire made you feel that way?
  • Do you think there are differences in how patients perceive the attire of different types of healthcare professionals (e.g., doctors, nurses, surgeons)?

Data Analysis

Data collected from the questionnaires and interviews will be analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). This method involves identifying, analyzing, and reporting patterns (themes) within the data. Thematic analysis allows researchers to go beyond mere descriptions and interpret the underlying meanings, beliefs, and assumptions embedded within participant responses.

Ethical Considerations

Informed consent will be obtained from all participants before their participation. Participants will be informed about the study's purpose, procedures, risks, and benefits. Confidentiality and anonymity will be maintained throughout the study. Any identifiable information will be anonymized during transcription and analysis.

Trustworthiness and Rigor

Several measures will be taken to ensure the trustworthiness and rigor of the study.

  • Reliability: Interviewer training and the use of an interview guide will enhance the consistency and reliability of data collection.
  • Validity: Triangulation of data sources (questionnaires and interviews) will be used to enhance the validity of the findings.
